Eye emergencies: what needs urgent assessment
If you have any of the symptoms below, do not wait and do not spend time reading. Call us now or go to the nearest eye casualty.
Symptoms that need same day assessment
- Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, even if it recovers
- Sudden severe eye pain, especially with a red eye, nausea or vomiting
- Any significant injury to the eye or eyelid, including blunt trauma
- Chemical splash in the eye, including cement, acid, alkali or bleach
- A curtain, shadow or veil moving across your vision
- New flashes of light, or a sudden marked increase in floaters
- Sudden double vision, especially with headache, weakness or slurred speech
- A painful red eye with reduced vision, in a contact lens wearer or after surgery
While you are on your way
- For a chemical splash, rinse the eye with clean running water for at least 15 minutes before travelling, then come in immediately.
- Do not rub, press or patch an injured eye. If something is stuck in the eye, leave it in place.
- Do not drive yourself if your vision is reduced. Ask someone to bring you.
- Bring your glasses, any eye drops you use and a list of your other medicines.
- Keep taking your prescribed eye drops unless a doctor tells you to stop.

If you cannot reach us and your symptoms are severe, go to the nearest hospital with an eye unit without delay. Delay is the main reason sight is lost in eye emergencies.
