What is recovery like after cataract surgery?
Vision is usually hazy for the first day or two, then clears over the following week as the eye settles. Prescribed drops are used for several weeks. Most people return to light activities within a few days, avoid rubbing the eye, swimming and dusty environments, and have a final glasses test about four to six weeks after surgery.
The first week
Expect mild grittiness, watering and sensitivity to light. The eye may look a little red. Use your drops exactly as prescribed, wash your hands first, and do not stop early even if the eye feels normal. Sleep on your back or on the other side if advised, and wear the shield at night if you were given one.
What to avoid at first
- Rubbing, pressing or splashing water directly into the eye
- Swimming and steam rooms until you are told it is safe
- Heavy lifting, straining and strenuous exercise for the period advised
- Dusty, smoky or muddy environments, and farm work
- Eye make up until cleared at your review
Vision settling and new glasses
Vision often improves within days, but it can fluctuate for a few weeks and colours may look strikingly bright or blue tinged at first because the yellowed lens has gone. Wait until your surgeon confirms the eye is stable, usually four to six weeks, before having new glasses made.
Later changes
Months or years afterwards some people notice vision becoming misty again. This is often clouding of the thin membrane behind the implant rather than a returning cataract, and it can be treated. Report any change in vision so the cause can be checked.
When to seek urgent assessment
- Increasing or severe pain in the eye
- Worsening redness, sticky discharge or swelling of the lids
- Vision getting worse rather than better
- New flashes, a shower of floaters or a shadow across the vision

- When can I drive again?
- Only once your vision meets the legal standard and you feel safe, which for many people is a few days to a couple of weeks. Ask at your follow up visit.
- Can I use my old glasses?
- You can wear them if they help, but the prescription will usually be wrong for the operated eye. Some people remove the lens on that side temporarily, and new glasses are made once the eye is stable.
