Dry Eye and MGD

How do I use a warm compress for my eyes?

A warm compress softens thickened oil in the eyelid glands so it can flow again. Apply gentle, comfortable warmth to the closed lids for about five to ten minutes, then massage the lids and clean the lash line. Done once or twice daily it is one of the most effective treatments for meibomian gland dysfunction. Never use heat that hurts.

Step by step

  • Wash your hands
  • Warm a clean flannel in hot water, wring it out and check it on your wrist so it is comfortably warm, never hot
  • Rest it over the closed lids for five to ten minutes, rewarming it as it cools, or use a reusable eye warming mask as directed
  • Massage the lids gently, upper lids downwards and lower lids upwards, towards the lash line, for about thirty seconds
  • Wipe along the lash line with a clean cloth or a lid cleaning wipe to remove the released oil and any crusting

Common mistakes

  • Water that is too hot, which risks burning thin lid skin
  • Stopping after five days, before the glands have had time to respond
  • Warmth without massage and cleaning, which does much less
  • Pressing directly on the eyeball rather than the lid
  • Using the same cloth repeatedly without washing it

How long to continue

Do it daily for at least six weeks before judging the effect, then continue at a frequency that keeps you comfortable, often once a day or a few times a week. Most people need to continue in some form long term.

When not to use heat

Do not apply heat to an eye that is acutely painful, has a spreading red swelling of the lid with fever, or has had recent surgery or injury, unless your ophthalmologist has told you to. Have those assessed first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a boiled egg or hot spoon?
These are not recommended because the temperature is hard to control and lid skin burns easily. A flannel or a purpose made warming mask is safer.
Does a warm compress treat a stye?
Warmth often helps a stye or chalazion settle, but a lump that persists beyond a few weeks, grows or is hard should be examined.
