Why are my eyes watering?
Watering has two broad causes: the eye producing extra tears because the surface is irritated, or tears not draining away properly. Dry eye, allergy, an ingrowing lash, an eyelid that sits poorly against the eye and a blocked tear duct are the common reasons. Examination of the lids and drainage system identifies which applies.
Too many tears
- Dry eye and an unstable tear film, the commonest cause in adults
- Allergy, with itching and swelling
- An eyelash rubbing the eye, or a foreign body
- Infection or inflammation of the surface
- Wind, dust, smoke and harmattan conditions
Poor drainage
- A blocked tear duct, which causes constant watering and sometimes a sticky discharge or a swelling beside the nose
- An eyelid turning outwards or inwards with age, so the drainage opening no longer meets the tear film
- Narrowing of the drainage opening
- In babies, an incompletely opened tear duct, which commonly settles during the first year
How the cause is found
The lids, lashes and lid position are examined, the tear film and corneal surface are assessed with dye, and the drainage system is checked, which may include gently irrigating the duct. Treatment then follows the cause, so lubricants and lid care for dryness, allergy treatment where relevant, lid surgery for a malpositioned lid, or a drainage procedure for a blocked duct.
When to seek urgent assessment
- Watering with a painful swelling beside the nose and fever, which suggests infection of the tear sac and needs prompt treatment
- Watering with reduced vision, significant pain or light sensitivity
- Blood stained tears
Frequently asked questions
- Will lubricating drops make watering worse?
- They usually reduce it, because they stabilise the tear film and stop the reflex tearing. Preservative free drops are preferred if you need them often.
- My baby's eye waters constantly. Is that serious?
- It is usually a narrow tear duct that opens by itself during the first year, helped by gentle massage and cleaning. Have it checked if the eye is red, swollen or the vision seems affected.
