What does loss of side vision mean?
Loss of side vision means part of your field of view is missing, even though you may still read normally. The pattern indicates the site of the problem: patchy peripheral loss suggests glaucoma or retinal disease, loss of the same half in both eyes suggests the pathway behind the eyes, and a sudden loss can mean a stroke or a detached retina.
How people notice it
Because the brain fills in missing areas, field loss is often noticed indirectly, by bumping into door frames, missing words at one side of a page, being startled by people approaching from one side, or difficulty with driving and crowds. Many people have no awareness of it at all, which is why formal testing is used.
What the pattern suggests
- Gradual patchy loss in the outer field of one or both eyes, commonly glaucoma
- Loss corresponding to a part of the retina, as in a vein occlusion or a detachment
- Loss of the same side of the field in both eyes, indicating the visual pathway or brain, for example after a stroke
- Loss of the outer field in both eyes, which can indicate pressure on the crossing point of the optic nerves
- Enlargement of the natural blind spot, seen with swollen optic discs
How it is tested
A visual field analyser presents small lights of varying brightness while you keep looking at a central target and press a button when you see one. It takes a few minutes per eye and is repeated over time, since comparing tests is what shows whether loss is stable or progressing.
Living with field loss
Where loss is permanent, practical measures help: deliberate scanning towards the affected side, rearranging the home to reduce trip hazards, good lighting and, for reading, a ruler or finger to keep place. Field loss can affect driving eligibility, so discuss this honestly with your ophthalmologist.
When to seek urgent assessment
- A sudden loss of part of the field, or a curtain or shadow in the vision, which needs assessment the same day
- Field loss with weakness, numbness or slurred speech, which needs emergency care

- Can lost field vision return?
- It can recover in some causes, such as swelling that is treated, but loss from nerve or brain damage is usually permanent. Rehabilitation strategies still make a real difference.
- Why do I need the test repeated?
